Tastes of the Market: Long Table Dinner
Our first annual long table dinner ‘Tastes of the Market’ celebrates the best of local food, and raises money for a local cause. For our inaugural event, we are fundraising for Steel Pony, a small, local farm in Red Deer County whose crop was devastated by a hailstorm on July 9th. All the plants that were in the ground at the time were pulverized in just 25 minutes. In their 13 years of operation, they’ve never had a hailstorm that has done so much damage.
Crop Insurance and Fruit and Vegetable Growers: The Issue
Years ago, when Steel Pony tried to get crop insurance, they were told they did not qualify as they are a market garden of 8 acres. The minimum acreage required was 30 acres. Since the hailstorm in July, they checked in with the AFSC (Agriculture Financial Services Corporation) once again and they do now offer a ‘specialty crop’ hail insurance program. Regular crop insurance for commodity producers is a cost that is shared by the federal and provincial government at 30% each, meaning the total subsidy is 60%. This specialty crop insurance is not subsidized at all. For Steel Pony, this insurance premium is so substantial making it untenable for their small farm. Other market gardens in Alberta are in the same position meaning they are always at risk of hail damage, resulting in the loss of crops and a loss of income. Steel Pony employs 8 people including the husband and wife team who own and operate the farm.
We are all about community and so we are coming together to support the Steel Pony community with this fundraiser. Our long table dinner will take place in the wonderful atmosphere of the Market Kitchen which is located inside the farmers’ market building. The menu is prepared and presented by a selection of restaurant and food vendors from the market using locally-sourced ingredients.
At least $60 of each ticket sold will go directly to Steel Pony.
Tickets are available now from Showpass.
